WaMu Still Can't Help You

For those of you just tuning in, chapter one is here.

On Monday night, as expected, my car insurance company auto-debited my account, triggering an overdraft fee of $33.

I called this morning, and as instructed, I asked for a supervisor. They hung up on me.

I called again, and this time was extra sugary sweet and got through to a supervisor. She explained to me that they've very sorry, but the previous four customer service reps have all been mistaken, and there's no way to stop the payment. Period. I'm out of luck.

The super that even though the payment was scheduled to be initiated on 12/1, that it was actually initiated on 11/28, and therefor I would have had to call on Friday to cancel Monday's payment.

This conflicts directly with everything I've found on the website, which says that the cutoff for cancelling a scheduled payment is 4:00 PM PST on the day the payment is scheduled. Not the previous business day, as the supervisor insists.

The upshot is that WaMu policy grants me forgivness of one overdraft fee per month. I was warned that further overdrafts are on me. I was told that there was no bank error in this case.

I asked to talk to the supervisor's supervisor. I was told that no senior supervisors are available at the moment, but that I could "schedule" a call with one. So they're supposed to call me back sometime tomorrow between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM EST.

I have been instructed to read the complete Terms of Service on the website so that said senior manager and I can more easily resolve the "misunderstanding."

I can't open a new bank account today. I have work to do. But I'm definitely checking out the local credit union ASAP.

To be continued...

Readers' Comments

Ugh! and your Twitter comment is not encouraging. This may end up being one of those expensive lessons that should not have happened. If the first person you spoke to supposedly deleted the transfer, they should be able to find a record of that - if they really want to. They probably won't at this point, but there is always a record of computer entries. Ergo (I love that word), there is a record of your prior calls.
